Competition Emmaüs-instituut Aalter submitted
In the frame of the Open Call of the Vlaamse Bouwmeester, META architectuurbureau entered – in collaboration with ABTand Boydens – its design for the expansion of the campus of the Emmaüs-instituut in Aalter.
The site on the Sint-Gerolflaan consists of a concatenation of volumes, built at various times throughout history. Because of the patchwork of buildings, the school misses a logical organisation and a number of important relations.
To resolve this fragmentation of existing and new functions META proposes to divide the requested program into 3 volumes that organises the campus as a theme or missing link.
By implanting compact volumes, a central circulation stream is created, called the aorta. The aorta bundles and organises the circulation of both the curricular and extra-curricular activities, which helps the campus to keep growing into a ‘Broader School’.
